The MGS Alumnae serves as a bridge between the Old Girls and the School. As the Alumnae, we are the custodians of our rich heritage: we encourage one another to strive to be Godly women of excellence with a heart of love, and uphold our motto: To Master, To Grow, To Serve, wherever we are placed and in every phase of our lives.
It gives me great pleasure to introduce myself as the newly elected President of the MGS Alumnae Association. I'm Sharmila Nair, Class of '86 and have been blessed with a rich MGS lineage. My mother attended MGS and my daughter represents the 3rd generation of us to have attended the school. It is indeed a privilege and an honour for me to serve our alma mater; I follow in the footsteps of very capable women and with God’s guidance, I hope to be able to serve with the same tenacity and dedication.
Founder's Day Celebrations
As with many other traditional events on our calendar, sadly, we have had to cancel our annual Founder’s Day Dinner. However, I am grateful for my committee of creative and energetic women who remain undeterred by the various restrictions and have organized a myriad of virtual events and activities for the MGS Family that you can get involved in from the comforts of your home. We hope that you will participate in these events with family and friends to rekindle memories of your time at MGS and continue to spark the MGS Spirit. Don't forget to raise the shout and send in your rendition of the MGS School Song for our Virtual Choir by Sunday, July 12th!
As MGS Girls, thinking about Founder's Day inevitably leads to a reflection of the past and to many of us Old Girls, 'Chapel' was, and continues to remain, an integral experience associated with our MGS memories. Much of those precious recollections lie with the traditional hymns that we sang. We have uploaded a version of Our Favourite Hymns on our website so that you may enjoy singing them at home with your families and created our very own MGS Alumnae Association Spotify list of these hymns. This compilation was first released to celebrate our 130th anniversary and inspired by Rev Malcolm Tan's list of the 5 hymns that every good MGS girl should know.
Please visit our Events page for the full calendar of events that culminates with our Founder’s Day Celebration on 25 July 2020 at 4.00pm. I hope that all of you will register for this and I look forward to seeing you all online.
Recent Initiatives and Events
The Covid-19 pandemic has also taken a toll on many of us in varying ways and my committee and I have had to adjust quickly to the evolving landscape.
Using technology in these unprecedented times, we kicked off our first virtual event with our AGM, which was held via Zoom on 20 June 2020. We all missed chatting face to face whilst enjoying the scrumptious tea prepared by our various committee members, but at the same time, we were able to enjoy the camaraderie albeit from afar.
To play our part in the MGS Community, the Alumnae has set up the MGS Alumnae Association Welfare Fund to help people in our MGS Family who are going through difficult times. We have earmarked $50,000.00 for this Fund to which we have given $16,200.00 to the School’s canteen vendors to help alleviate their financial burdens during this time. In addition, the Alumnae Associated gifted our MGS staff with e-gift cards from Grab as a token of our appreciation for going beyond the call of duty during this challenging period. Please visit our website for more information on the Fund and how you can contribute.
We also set up a directory of MGS-owned businesses to facilitate networking, help support and encourage our Old Girls and provide the MGS Family with a rich resource for Goods and Services. Please take some time to go through it and lend your support to your fellow alumna. New listings will be updated regularly.
The unwavering support from each one of you all these years remains one of the pillars of our Alumnae’s success. I hope that you will continue to support our Committee as we embark on this next chapter of this journey. To Master, to Grow, to Serve.
